Real Life Supernatural Encounters - #Halloween #Samhain #NosCalanGaeaf

This was originally published last year as a guest post on Hugh Roberts' blog, and you can find it here.  But I thought I'd post it on my own blog too, and give those who may be interested another chance to read it.  Today being Halloween/Samhain seems like as good a day as any.  So, here are the stories of some of my real supernatural encounters.

*~*~*

I see dead people.

Sorry.  I couldn’t resist.  I’ve wanted an excuse to use that line since I first saw “The Sixth Sense” many years ago.  But it is the truth, so I hope you’ll forgive me for indulging myself.

Anyway, it’s not just people.  It’s animals too.

Well, technically, these days I don’t ‘see’ them, because I lost my eyesight more than a decade ago to Congenital Glaucoma.  But I saw them when I still had vision, and I still hear and feel things.

~

I’ve lived in several places where unexplained shadows, cold spots, and footsteps, were frequent occurrences, and whispered words from unknown speakers could be heard at times.  Things you can dismiss as being other people in the house if you don’t live alone, but aren’t so easily dismissed when you’re home alone.

Like when you’re writing at 3:00am-  again – and realize that couldn’t have been your husband who just walked up behind  you, because you can hear his snoring coming from the bedroom, and it couldn’t have been the dog either, because the dog is that fluffy warm lump on your feet.

Or you’re taking advantage of everyone else still being asleep in the early morning to have a shower, and hear someone telling you to hurry up because the dog needs out.  So you rush to finish – wondering why they can’t take her – only to discover when you emerge from the bathroom that the only living being awake besides you is the dog in question, waiting impatiently by the door to go out.

Yeah.  Those kinds of things.

It would take too long to detail everything, and I doubt I could recall them all anyhow.  But, I’ve had some less subtle experiences, which I’m going to tell you about.

To clarify: the first three experiences that follow happened when I still had my eyesight.

~

The first started when I was maybe ten years old, and we had moved in to the house we were in fairly recently.

I woke to find my bedroom colder than usual, and a little girl in red in the room.  She looked about six, with dark hair.  She walked around the room a little, as though examining my stuff, and then disappeared.  Moments later, the temperature in the room returned to normal.

I saw her several times during the years I lived in that house, and tried to talk to her, but – though I called her my friend, and thought of her as ‘Tabitha’ – she never so much as acknowledged me.

When I foolishly mentioned her to some children from my class, they teased me and said she was an imaginary friend.  They did it so much I started to think they were right.

Until I heard my Nan telling someone about the little dark haired girl in red she’d seen several times running through the living room and starting up the stairs before vanishing.  I’d never described the girl I called Tabitha to anyone, but Nan described her perfectly, and I knew it had to be the same little girl.  When I told my Nan, she agreed.

~

The second was in the same house, happened a few years after my first ‘Tabitha’ visit, but only happened once.

I walked out of the bathroom one night, and standing in front of me was a little boy in a sailor suit.  He smiled, turned, and started walking away.  He’d only taken a couple of steps when he vanished.

I never saw him again, and to my knowledge nobody else saw him at all.

~

The third happened in the flat I lived in when I first moved out of my parents’ house.

I put the plug in the bath, leaving the water running, before heading to the bedroom to fetch my pyjamas.  When I got back to the bathroom, the plug was gone.  It had literally disappeared.

The plughole was empty, it wasn’t attached to the chain that usually attaches them to the bath (not surprisingly, since the chain had snapped before this) and it wasn’t on the side of the bath near the tap (which is where I’d kept the plug since its chain snapped, so where it would have been if I hadn’t put it in after all).

After searching the bathroom for several minutes, I gave up and fetched the kitchen sink’s plug for my bath.  It didn’t fit right, so I had to hold it until the water was deep enough that water pressure would keep it there, and had to be careful not to knock it with my foot, but it allowed me to have my bath.

For the next several days I searched for that plug.  My Mam even came to help me look.  We searched the entire flat, but it was nowhere to be found.

Until three weeks later, when it was suddenly back in the bath.

I lived alone in the flat, and nobody could have gotten in without my knowledge.  Plus, why would someone break in to steal my plug? Especially since I had much better things to steal.

~

I’ve also had visits from two of the petkids I’ve lost – the two I was most closely bonded with when they were alive.

The first was my Oriental cat, Chance.  I felt him jump on my bed one night the Halloween two years after he died... Felt the weight of him beside me on the bed.  Heard his purr.  Felt his silky soft fur rub against my hand.  And then he was gone.

I had a similar visit from my Westie, Kero, two Halloweens after he died.

It’s like my boys wanted to say one final, “Goodbye,” to me before they moved on.

*~*~*

How about you? Have you had any spooky encounters of your own? If so, I'd love to hear about them.

Oh, and... Happy Halloween, or blessed Samhain... Whichever you'd rather I use for you.

Or, as Welsh speakers say here in Wales, "Nos Calan Gaeaf Hapus," (which translates to, "Happy Eve of the Winter Kalend," since November 1st marks the first day of the Celtic Winter, and Celtic new year).

Random Ramblings - October 29th 2021

This post is mainly petkid-related, but also contains some other random things I wanted to share.  Enjoy!

*~*

I took some new photos of Artemis when she was playing in her vivarium after I cleaned it last week.  I'd originally only planned on getting a new shot of her just standing in her vivarium to show how big she's gotten, which is what the first photo is.  But right after I closed the glass doors of her vivarium I heard her making scratching noises, so opened the door back up to see what she was up to, and found her trying to climb her hanging vines.  And then, a few minutes later, caught her peering around the edge of her cave as though checking the coast was clear to come out from behind it.  Anyway, here are the photos:

~

I got a couple of new photos of Mollie too, though they're not fantastic, because she kept darting for cover every time she realized I was trying to take her photo.  Here are the two reasonable photos I got though:

~

Artemis is way easier to get photos of.  Mollie is not a fan of the flashy thing.  Plus, it's much easier for someone without sight like me to keep track of Artemis' movements than Mollie's, since tortoises move much slower than chinchillas (though tortoises actually do move faster than you might expect).

*~*

Both dogs were meant to get groomed last week, but Logan had more knots in his fur than the groomer expected and she hadn't allowed enough time to work on those and still have time to deal with Lilie.  I had mentioned he had knots in his fur, because Logan has fur with a hint of the poodle curl and the silky fineness of a spaniel, which tangles and knots almost as fast as I brush him, and where the dogs had ended up overdue for their grooming due to their August appointment getting cancelled and my having trouble getting them a new appointment quickly, his tangles had gotten incredibly bad.

~

Anyway, to cut a long story short, we ended up deciding to leave Lilie with the groomer and bring Logan home to do what we could for him ourselves, which essentially boiled down to giving him a home haircut, since we couldn't comb out the knots, so ended upp cutting them out instead.  We did it that way because Lilie is too excitable for us to manage to do ourselves, where as Logan is much more laid back.  Plus, Lilie's claws were a big issue and we couldn't do those ourselves.

Well, Logan looks kind of  scruffy, and his haircut is uneven, but at least he's got no knots and tangles in his fur anymore, which is what the groomer said was the important thing.  She said to get the tangles out as quickly as we could - even if we had to take him to another groomer, or cut him ourselves - and worry about making him look tidy again when his fur grows back enough for him to have a proper grooming session in a couple of months time.  So, that's what we did.  And here's the result:

~

Amusingly, Logan actually slept through most of the process.  He must really trust me to fall asleep when I'm wielding a pair of scissors near him, that's for sure.  I know I wouldn't have been sleeping in his position... I think few people or animals would have been that relaxed when a blind person was using scissors on them.  But somehow Logan was sleeping so soundly he was snoring a lot of the time, and didn't seem to care about anything besides the fact I was paying attention to him.  I tell you, my dog's mental.  On the bright side, it made it easier to deal with his grooming needs with him asleep.

*~*

I've been making some holiday themed fabric bags as reusable alternatives to wrapping paper for gift giving this year.  Here's one of them so you can see what they look like:

I thought it would be nice to use bags that can be reused for gift giving, rather than wrapping paper that will just be torn and thrown away.  And I thought it would be even nicer still if I made them myself.  But I wanted them to still look festive, hence the holiday themed fabric.  I still need to make a couple more, and also make tags so I know which bag is for who, but I thought I'd show you one of the completed bags so you can get an idea of what they'll look like when I've sewn each one.

*~**

Two weeks ago, I got a call from the hospital asking me to go there to see their doctor again, since he wanted to discuss my test results with me.  I was kind of concerned, since the only thing I could think of was that they saw something they felt needed discussing in the results of the tests they sent off when I was there a couple of weeks before.  Bearing in mind, they said they'd only get in touch about them if there was something of note in the results.  Anyway, I was meant to go last Thursday (October 21st).

Then, a couple of days later, I got a call telling me not to go to that appointment after all, because the doctor wanted a couple more weeks before he saw me so as to be able to have enough time pass between blood tests, because he wanted to check my levels again.  Which suggests he wants to check my heamoglobin and platelet levels again.  And they've made me an appointment for November 8th.

So, now I'm not entirely certain if they found something in those tests they're concerned about, just want to check my levels - especially with how low my platelets were last time - or both.  I guess I'll find out on November 8th.  In the meantime, I'm trying not to worry about it.  Yeah, anyone who knows me knows how well that's working out.  LOL! But I'm trying.

*~*

I feel like I've said this a lot this year, but: our weather's been a bit all over the place recently, with mild almost warm days, rather chilly days, dry days, wet days, days somewhere in between, and days where it can't decide which to be.  We've even had a couple of storms.  Mostly rainstorms - Wales is good at those.  But there was an impressive thunderstorm early on the morning of October 20th.

At least, I thought it was an impressive thunderstorm.  Logan wasn't so impressed.  He's still not a huge fan of storms.  OK... He hates them.  Though at least he doesn't get quite as scared as he used to, and only cowers against me rather than whining and barking in fear like he did as a puppy.   Lilie isn't really bothered by them.  Neither is Mollie, except if storms cut off the power and she loses her music or TV.  And as for Artemis... She was sleeping, and I'm not even sure she noticed the storm happened (though I strongly suspect she knew it was coming, since she dug in early the night before the storm).

~

We tried filming the thunderstorm, but - though it was impressive, asI said - the thunder and lightning were spaced so far apart we kept missing getting it on camera. We did, however, get a video of the rain, where you can also hear my wind chimes tinkling in the wind that accompanied the rain.  And here it is:

Lilie had a vet checkup yesterday.

She has to be evaluated regularly because of the pills she has for her skin irritation issue.

The skin irritation issue (which is a common problem for certain breeds, Westies among them) has moved to her ears, so now - on top of the pill she has every day - she has to have drops in her ears.  At least for a while.  As it stands at the moment, it's twice a day for a week, once a day for another week, and then every other day for a couple of weeks.  After that we talk to the vet again.

The Emoji Book Tag - #AmReading

I recently saw Cat over at The Strawberry Post do this interesting and short book tag that looked fun to do, and I couldn't resist joining in.  It’s called the Emoji book tag, and the idea is that you have a look at your phone, tablet, etc, when typing and see the first five emojis you have on there (your most recently used, or most popular) and see if you can match a book to the emoji.

If you'd like to check out Cat's post, you can do so here.  Also, feel free to play along too, whether in the comments section of this post or on your own blog.  But make sure you let me know where I can find your answers, because I'd hate to miss them.

For now though, let’s take a look at the five emojis I apparently use most, and see what books I can match to them, shall we? And, by the way, I'm going to do the same thing as Cat did and concentrate on books I've read this year, since I happen to agree with her that it's a great idea considering the theme of the tag. So, let's check out my list of emojis and books.

 ~

1. 👍 Thumbs up.

"Skin Taker" (Chronicles Of Ancient Darkness, #8) by Michelle Paver - in fact, the whole series gets a very firm thumbs up from me.  If you enjoy historical fantasy there's a good chance you'll enjoy this one.

2. 💜 Purple heart.

"Kingfall" (The Kingfall Histories, #1) by David Estes - in fact all the series so far.  If you love epic fantasies, you should totally check out this series, as well as the "Fatemarked" series, which is set in the same world, but a while before the events of this one.

3. 😢 Crying face.

"Water For Elephants" by Sara Gruen.  Seriously, if you can read this one without crying, you have a heart of stone.

4. 😊 Smiling face.

"The Midnight Library" by Matt Haig.  I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did, but it turned out to be an excellent read, with some parts that really make you appreciate those small things in life.

5. 🎂  Birthday cake.

"Meant To Be Immortal" (Argeneau, #32) by Lynsay Sands.  OK, with this one I'm clutching at straws for connections.  But I would be with any book I've so far read this year to use it for the birthday cake emoji, so... *shrugs* There is cake involved in it, which counts, right? Anyway, if you're a fan of paranormal romances involving vampires, like a creative vampire origin story, and don't mind when things get a bit steamy in places (if you know what I mean) you should definitely check out not just this book, but the whole series.  They're best read in order if you can, but to be honest you can just pick up the series with whichever book you want and not be lost.

Lilie The #Westie On Sleepovers And Grooming Sessions

Hi everyone.  This is Lilie the Westie.

Last weekend, Nana went to see some humans we don't know, and her dog, Izabel, couldn't go with her.  Mummy says it's because the dog who lives where Nana was visiting doesn't like other dogs.  So Izabel came to stay with us, and we had a doggy sleepover Saturday night.

It was fantastic fun! Me and Izabel played and played, and then took short power naps - just long enough to give us the energy to play some more.  It was awesome! I was sad to see her go.  Although, I did have to nap most of Monday to recover.  But, let me tell you, it was so totally worth it!

Logan disagrees.  He was very upset to find himself dealing with two very energetic dogs all weekend - even with them being as cute as we are.  He loves us both, but for some reason kept getting upset.  Mummy says he probably wouldn't have minded quite so much if we hadn't insisted on keep running him over and jumping on him when we were playing.  Hey, it wasn't our fault he kept trying to nap where we were trying to play, was it? Anyway, unlike me, Logan was glad when Izi went home.  He says dealing with the two of us for that long is just too much.  Mummy says she understands, but I personally don't see what his problem is.  Plus,if you ask me, a bit more running around would do him some good.

~

On Wednesday me and Logan were meant to go to the groomer.

Well, technically we did go to the groomer.  Mummy and Nana took us in Nana's car.  But Logan didn't end up staying there.  Something about how where it took us so long to get an appointment he's got more knots in his fur than the groomer expected, and she hadn't allowed enough time to deal with him.  So Mummy took him home and said she'd make other arrangements.  You'll have to ask her about that if you want to know details though.  Either way, it meant Logan got to come for a ride in Nana's car, but still hasn't been groomed, even though he needs to be groomed.

I, however, did stay with the groomer, and got a full pampering session.  I was a bit anxious about having been left there when Logan wasn't, but I mostly loved it.  And look how beautiful I looked afterwards:

Aren't I just so super cute?

Logan was really happy when I came home.  He missed me loads while I was out getting groomed.  Clearly, even if he thinks a weekend with both me and Izi is a bit much, my little brother loves me.  But then, who doesn't? Everyone loves me... I'm adorable! Don't you agree?

Lots of licks,

Lilie

More #EBook Formats Available For "Tedi And The Soothing Snow" -A #Children'sBook About #Death, #Depression, And #Grief

After losing his best friend, Arth, Tedi is so sad it feels like his heart is torn up inside of him. Now Tedi just sits by the window and cries, no longer caring about anything but how much he misses his friend, and seeing nothing of the beauty outside.

Mama Bear insists it will get easier in time, but Tedi’s not so sure; Tedi’s sure he’ll never be happy again. And, as Summer turns to Autumn, and then Autumn turns to Winter, it’s starting to look like Tedi might be right.

But is Tedi really right, or is it Mama Bear who’s right after all?

Unless you missed seeing last week's post about the release of this book, you will already know you can grab your copy of "Tedi And The Soothing Snow" via Smashwords in a variety of formats.

But, as I said in that post, I know not everyone who buys eBooks gets them via Smashwords.  So, with that in mind, you may be interested to learn that you can now also buy "Tedi And The Soothing Snow" in eBook format from other places.  Places like Barnes & Noble, Kobo, Apple iBooks, Amazon UK, Amazon Canada, Amazon US, and other Amazon sites.

However, as I also mentioned in that post, I do know not everyone reads eBooks.  So, if that applies to you, don't worry: I haven't forgotten about you.  "Tedi And The Soothing Snow" will be made available in paperback and audio for the benifit of those who prefer a physical or audio book - just as soon as those formats can be arranged.

Regardless of your prefered format though, if you're on Goodreads and would like to add the book to your shelves, you can find the book's Goodreads page here.

No matter the format, if you buy and read the book, please consider leaving a review, whether on Goodreads, your blog, or the retailer you purchased the book from.  And don't forget to tell anyone you think might be interested in the book all about it.  Remember: reviews and word of mouth help authors sell books.  And I appreciate all reviews - whether short, long, or somewhere in between.

A #NewBook + #CanadianThanksgiving + A #Chinchilla Birthday + #BadMoonRising + Some Random Ramblings

As you might have seen in Monday's post, I published a new story.  It's called "Tedi And The Soothing Snow" and is all about a little bear's struggles to come to terms with the loss of his best friend.  I'm hopeful I'll be announcing the availability of the book on more than just Smashwords soon - I'm just waiting for that to happen.  Once the eBook version is available elsewhere, I'll start the process of publishing the paperback, and then start looking for someone to do the audio version.

*~*

This past Monday (October 11th) was Canadian Thanksgiving.

We didn't really do anything for it other than acknowledging it on social media and having a Thanksgiving-ish themed dinner, which in my case was garlic mashed potatoes, sweetcorn, green beans, carrots, onion gravy, and cranberry sauce.  But at least we didn't completely ignore it.  Besides, since Kelly and I are actually the only ones in the immediate family to acknowledge Canadian Thanksgiving (or try to, with varying levels of success from year to year) which we only do because Kelly's Canadian, there wasn't a whole lot more we could have done for it anyhow.

*~*

Tuesday (October 12th) was Mollie the chinchilla's birthday.  She's now six years old.

I gave her some oatmeal with berries in it for breakfast, which she seemed to decide was a great way to celebrate her birthday.  Really there isn't much more to be done to celebrate the birthday of a chinchilla.  Especially one who - despite opening up a lot since we moved to this house almost a year ago - will only tolerate human company and interaction for a short time, and then only when she's in the mood for it.

*~*

October is Teri Polen's "Bad Moon Rising" event - like it is every year.

I've joined in the fun with my book "Vinnie The Vegetarian Zombie" again.  My interview post went up yesterday (October 14th) and - if you missed seeing it, but would like to read it - ccan be found here.

*~*

My Mam got me a waffle maker as an early Christmas present.  Yes, I asked for it.

I wanted to be able to make waffles.  Plus, it's not only a waffle maker.  It has removable plates, and the spare plates that come with it transform it in to a doughnut maker, toasted sandwich maker, or small grill.

I told Mam she could keep it aside until Christmas, even though I knew about it, but she told me to go ahead and have it now.  So I did.

I've tried out all the different plates at least once, making veganized versions of waffles with maple syrup, doughnuts with chocolate on top, and cheese and bean toasties, all of which are pictured below:

I also grilled tofu, made vegan cheese and tomato toasties a couple of times, and made waffles again; this time with coconut creme fresh, banana, and agave syrup.  But I didn't get photos of those, even though I got better at judging cooking time, so my later attempts have been better than the first ones.

*~*

As you might have figured out from the doughnuts, toasted sandwiches, and waffles, the dental issue I was dealing with is no longer bothering me.  The abscess is gone, and there's no longer any pain.

The viral and chest infections seem to have cleared up too - I think - so I now appear to be back to just my usual level of tiredness, and the health issues I just have to put up with on a daily basis.

~

Oh, and I forgot to tell you that I learned when I was dealing with blood tests recently that they neglected to tell me something strange back in April, which I should have been told, and which remains the case in my blood now... I'm missing the antibodies to Covid my body should have created with my having the Vaccination back at the end of March.  I literally have none, which shouldn't be the case, even if we look at the time between now and then, and definitely shouldn't have been the case only a month after I had the shot.  But there it is.

The whole point of the Covid jab is to help your body form antibodies to fight Covid if you're later exposed to it.  My body, however, didn't form any.  In short, I've gone through all this with issues from having nasty reactions from the jab, and it's for nothing.  I've got no protection against Covid, and the health issues aggrivated by my having had the jab appear to be remaining aggrivated.

All I can say is: I guess it's a good thing I don't see many people or go out much anyhow, and that my low resistance to infection, and inability to have the second jab, meant I'd been continuing to be cautious, and interacted physically with as few people as possible.

~

Anyway, last week, while I was still recovering, I got a call from the receptionist at the doctor's surgery to ask if I'd like my flu jab this year, and if so  could she make me an appointment to go to the surgery for it.  I get asked every year, even though I know for a fact my history of bad reactions to the jab that made me stop having it is mentioned in my notes a couple of times.  I can only assume they're just giving me the oppertunity to decide to risk it if I want to.  Either that, or they just automatically call everyone without bothering to read their medical notes, which is a strong possibility to be honest.

I said, "No.  I don't need a bad reaction to a jab right now, thanks.  I'm suffering enough from the last one."

She just calmly said, "OK.  I'll put that in your notes."  There was the sound of typing for a few seconds, and then she said, "Goodbye," and hung up.

Now I'm wondering if she just wrote that I refused it, or actually put exactly what I said in my notes.  LOL!

Dad's started coming over to spend Tuesday evenings at our place, to do something together and have dinner here.  He'll be bringing my brother, Wayne, with him some weeks, but this week it was just Dad.

While Dad was here, we got the supplies I'm storing for his craft projects properly organized.  You probably saw them with my various projects waiting to be completed when I showed you the finished craft room and the stuff in the bedroom; he asked me to keep them here with mine.  But, though I had the stuff all nicely put together, I wanted him to properly organize them himself, since he had some things kept together for certain projects he wanted to work on, and I didn't want to mix things up.  Anyway, they're sorted now, and the couple of items among them he didn't need - or that weren't meant to be with them, but got mixed in with his stuff - are put in their proper places in the craft room now.

Then, after dinner, we watched the first two episodes of "A Discovery Of Witches" on DVD.  Dad loves the show so much he was eager to see it again, even though this is his fifth time watching it, but I've never seen it before.  Though I'm enjoying it a lot, I'm not sure I completely share Dad's enthusiasm; I don't exactly love it quite as much as Dad does, but I can see why he loves it so much, and am definitely enjoying it.  I'd give it a five out of five stars so far, but it's because I round up, since it's somewhere between a four and five star for me.  I know Dad wouldn't hesitate to give it the full five stars though.

*~*

I finished the blanket I was working on knitting that my Nan had started.  Not sure if you remember me mentioning that there was a half-knitted blanket among the craft projects I inherited from Nan (Dad's Mother) along with her craft supplies? Well, anyway it's that blanket.  I've been trying to finish it for several weeks, and finally did on Sunday.  So, here's a photo of it now that it's finished:

Nan had knitted all of the green part, and some of the yellow.  I finished the yellow, and also added the blue stripe.  I don't know if Nan intended adding another colour after the yellow, but I decided to do so.

Tomorrow is my brother's birthday.  Carl almost never reads my blog, but just in case... Happy birthday, Carl!

The above is the book blurb for my latest release, "Tedi And The Soothing Snow" - published late last night.

You can already grab your copy of "Tedi And The Soothing Snow" via Smashwords in all formats they offer, which means there's a format that works for you, regardless of your prefered method of reading eBooks.  In fact, if you can read this post, you can read the book.

However, I know not everyone reads eBooks, or likes to buy from Smashwords.  So, if that applies to you, you'll be interested to know the book will soon become available via other retailers such as Apple iBooks and Barnes & Noble.  Plus,  a Kindle version will be coming soon for those who prefer to get their eBooks exclusively via Amazon.  And paperback and audio versions will also become available as soon as they can be arranged, for those who prefer either a physical book or an audiobook.  So, if you'd like to grab a copy, but Smashwords isn't your retailer of choice, or eBooks aren't your format of choice, just watch this blog for news of the book becoming available elsewhere and in other formats.

Regardless of your prefered format though, if you're on Goodreads and would like to add the book to your shelves, you can find the book's Goodreads page here.
