Holidays 2013

Well, I'm not sure how we got to this point so quickly, but the holidays (as in Yule and christmas) are over for 2013, and 2014 is just around the corner.

There wasn't much this year because money was tight with Kero's vet bills and taking in Cara and Luna, but I for one enjoyed the holidays despite that. I mean, there wasn't much, but what we had was all stuff we thought was great.

I had a My Little Pony pegasus from the "Build A Bear" workshop from my brother, Carl, a jumper with a Westie on it from my Mam, some stickers to use in cardmaking from Kelly, some money from most of the rest of the family, a lot of chocolate, and a few DVDs from Kelly ("The Host" and a couple of Scooby Doo DVDs).

I made my own home made sweet mince pies, which were done using a filling made from raisins and dried cranberries soaked for two days in lemon juice and orange juice. I also made double chocolate brownies, plus a star shaped white chocolate and cranberry cake. They were all very tasty if I say so myself!

Dinner was home made stuffing made by me to make sure it was vegetarian friendly, minted roast potatoes, honey roast parsnips, carrots, sprouts and cranberry sauce for me, and honey-mustard ham, herby turkey and minted roast potatoes for Kelly. Kero and Cara had some of the honey-mustard ham and herby turkey, and the five degus had hazelnuts, peanuts and oat cakes (the nuts were still in their shells).

And I watched my favourite Christmas movie and read my favourite Christmas story on Christmas Eve, which means watching "Santa Clause - The Movie" and reading "The Bear Father Christmas Forgot" - I did read other stories and watch other movies as well though.

Degu Days Duo pre-released

I've pre-released my "Degu Days Duo" series.

“The Degu Days Duo” is a short series of just two books telling the story of two different days in the lives of Jacob, Jasper, Jenks and Joshua – four degu brothers who live in a cage together. The stories are told from the point of view of one of the degus, so read on and see the world from the point of view of a small and furry rodent!

The degus in question are my own degu buddies, and they're from Jenks' point of view.

Yes, these are the ones I mentioned writing as part of NaNoWriMo this year.

Kero's World, Book 6: Kero Celebrates Christmas

"Christmas is here, and with it comes snow and Santa Paws – whoever he is. What will Kero think of the snow? Will he be able to make sense of all the holiday activity? And will he be able to stay up long enough to catch this mysterious Santa Paws?"

This book is officially released today.

The ISBN is 9781301781553 and you can find the book on Smashwords, Barnes & Noble, and Apple. It will also soon be available via other retailers.

NaNoWriMo 2013 - Week four update

Week four of NaNoWriMo is over.

I didn't manage to finish writing the story of "Filicity The Musical Platypus" that I was working on this week. Part of this is because - unlike the other three - I only had a very rough draft to work with (the other three were in early draft, but this one was just rough scribbles, if you know what I mean) and part of it is because I got busy making holiday cards and reading "The Hunger Games Trilogy" so didn't spend as much time working on writing as I should have.

Still, there's a couple of hours to go before NaNoWriMo is over.

Besides, even if I don't finish writing the story before the month is up, I've made progress on it and written those other three and that counts for something!

NANoWriMo 2013 - week three update

Week three of NaNoWriMo is over.

I've finished writing the third story I planned to work on this month, which is called "Goodies For Grandmother" and is based on the "Little Red Riding Hood" story, but rather than a big bad wolf and a woodcutter my version has a brownie and a pair of fairies. I've even arranged a cover for it with Jacob. It just needs the final edit and for Jacob to have a chance to work on the cover.

I've also started working on "Filicity The Musical Platypus" and arranged a cover for it with Iggy. "Filicity The Musical Platypus" is a story about a platypus who discovers a love of music and wants to learn to play an instrument.

So, all being well I should have four stories just needing editing by the time NaNoWriMo is over!

I have no idea about word count. I mean, I could check the word count of each story and figure it out that way, but since I've done several drafts with each story that wouldn't be accurate, so I don't see the point in bothering to figure it out.

I'm pleased with my progress this month though. Especially since I've also found time to make a Christmas stocking for Cara, do a reasonable amount of work on Christmas cards, read a few novels, and do general day to day things like housework and playing with furkids.

Kero's November 2013 medical update

We gave Kero a bath on Saturday to properly clean those sores he has and it seems to have helped... They're finally showing signs of healing!

Well, we put anticeptic cream on the sores too, but we were doing that before and the cream didn't seem to be doing much until after we gave him the bath.

Hopefully we can avoid a return trip to the vet for now?

Fingers crossed!

He's still showing his age with lack of interest in physical activity and obvious achy joints and muscles, but there's not much that can be done about that. After all, he is almost nine and a half years old!

His groomer comes in just over a week, so he'll get another bath then.

Kero's World, Book 5: Kero Goes To Town

"Kero’s very excited to find he’s going to town with his humans. He’s sure there must be loads of great things to do there, after all the humans go there all the time. But what kinds of things can a little dog do in town? And will it be as much fun as he thinks it will?"

Today is the official release date for this book.

The ISBN is 9781301736898 and you can find the book on Smashwords, Barnes & Noble, and Apple. It will also soon be available via other retailers.

NaNoWriMo 2013 - week two update

The second week of NaNoWriMo is over.

I've now finished writing both of the books in my "Degu Days Duo" series; a pair of books about my very own degu buddies. They now just need to be given a final edit before I set them up for pre-release. I already have covers for them, so I can pre-release them as soon as the final editing is done. I'm going to leave the final editing until after NaNoWriMo is over though.

I'm now starting work on a story called "Goodies For Grandmother" which is one I actually wrote several years ago when I was in a writing group (I've mentioned said writing group on here before). It's based on the story of "Little Red Riding Hood" but with not a single wolf in sight. I may have actually posted the story in its original form on here before... I can't remember and can't be bothered to check. I'm making some changes though and getting it ready for the final editing stage too. I'll have to wait to pre-release this one though as I don't have a cover for it yet.

Of weight, pets and medical mutterings

I've lost a stone (14lbs) since I stopped the tablets at the end of July.

Not because I've been dieting or been doing serious exercise (though I have been doing a bit more and eating a little better than I was before). Mostly it's just stopping the tablets that's made the difference though. I mean, that's the biggest change.

I dare say chasing after Cara helps a bit though, LOL!

Cara is seriously hyper, and in to absolutely everything!

Luna loves Cara, and even the degu buddies tolerate her enough not to make a fuss if she takes a nap on top of their cage these days.

Kero's still happy to sleep with Cara, but he's seriously feeling his age these days and not really interested in playing with a kitten. He also still has those sores, which seem to be a bit tender. We didn't get to the vet with him like we'd planned to. We're going to give him a bath Saturday and see if cleaning them up properly will help first. It's worth a try, right?

Oh, and on the subject of Cara and weight... Cara has gotten a lot bigger, and she now weighs about 3lbs. I say "about" because it was hard to keep her still to weigh her so I can't be 100% sure.

NaNoWriMo 2013 - week one update

The first week of NaNoWriMo is over.

I've finished writing the first book in the "Degu Days Duo" that I'm working on. It's called "The Great Degu Round-Up" and is about a degu cage cleaning day from the point of view of our degus. The story is actually told from Jenks' point of view. I'm now working on the second book in the series, which is called "A Very Degu Christmas" and is also from Jenks' point of view.

NaNoWriMo 2013

November is NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month).

Because I write shorter pieces I don't really need an entire month to write something, so I'm using NaNoWriMo to work on some half-written stories I haven't gotten to recently.

I don't begrudge the time taken to settle both Luna and Cara in, and I certainly don't begrudge Kero the time he's needed because of being so unwell (he's still the same as he was when I did Sunday's post). I know nobody said I did, but I wanted to make sure that was clear.

But right now I want to get some of those stories finished.

I've been lucky in that I was so ahead that I could pre-release Kero's books and a couple of others and buy myself some time, but the last one is officially released early next month so I need to get some more finished and pre-released. NaNoWriMo seems like a good way to do that.

Goodreads 2013 reading challenge completed!

I've finished reading my 250 books for the Goodreads yearly reading challenge.

I would have finished reading them sooner if I counted re-reads, but I don't. Some people do, but not me... I don't even bother to list them on Goodreads.

Anyway, I finished reading the 250th book today!

A health update for Kero

Kero seems to be fine apart from the weakness in his back legs and some sores he's ended up with somehow.

We're putting anticeptic cream on the sores and planning to take him to the vet a week on Monday if they don't show signs of healing by then.

That also gives time for the last of his anti-inflamitary medication to get used up so we can see if it's the only thing keeping him in reasonable health.

Kero's World, book 4: Kero Celebrates Halloween

"Something strange is going on, and Kero doesn’t know if he’s more confused or frightened. All he knows for sure is that the humans are calling it Halloween. Will Kero be able to make sense of this Halloween thing? Or is it just too scary and confusing for a little dog to understand?"

Today is the official release date for this book. It's the fourth in my "Kero's World" series.

"The “Kero’s World” stories are all about the adventures of a West Highland White Terrier named Kero; read his stories, and see the world from the point of view of a little white dog."

The ISBN for this book is 9781301689095.

It's already available via Smashwords in all formats they offer, plus a couple of other retailers (such as Barnes And Noble and Apple) and will be available via other retailers soon!

Random questions: zombie and vampire dietry requirements

Two random questions today...

If a vegetarian became a zombie, would the zombie's need for flesh over-power the previous instinct not to eat meat?

And...

Does it matter what blood type a vampire drinks like it matters what blood type a person is given during a blood transfusion?

Carl's visit and Tamara's birthday (FD)

Carl was here for the weekend. We carved pumpkins, made pasta with pumpkin sage sauce and cheese, made pumpkin pie and pumpkin juice, made cheese and potato pie with sprouts and peas, and ordered pizza. We also watched "The Craft" and "Practical Magic" and "The Nightmare Before Christmas" and "The Hunger Games" together. Oh, and we played Lego, I beat him four times at Scrabble, we won a game each of Battleships, he beat me twice at Snakes And Ladders, and I beat him once at Ludo. He was meant to go home yesterday (Monday) but we had a really nasty storm Sunday night/Monday morning and trains weren't running for most of Monday. Some still aren't now, but he was able to get home today at least.

While he was here we were going to do Halloween photos of the furkids, but only Kero would co-operate. The degus wouldn't stay still long enough, and it turns out Cara is afraid of pumpkins. I know I shouldn't laugh, but having her leap back in to my arms and cling to me shaking with fear just because I tried to put her beside a pumpkin is a bit funny... Well, actually, it's VERY funny, LOL!

***

It's our niece Tamara's 20th birthday today. Hard to believe that she's already out of her teens, but it's true! I hope she's having an amazing birthday!

Kero health update

We took Kero to the vet again Tuesday because there wasn't much change. His temperature was up again and everything.

The vet gave us some anti-inflamitary stuff and some powder to put in his water to make sure he stays hydrated. We also got a couple more days of antibiotics for him.

They're sure it's just a nasty viral infection, but if he doesn't improve soon then he has to have blood tests to check for anything worse. When we called to change his grooming date his groomer said there seems to be a nasty doggy virus going around though, so maybe it's that?

I mean, Kero's a lot better; eating and drinking now and not shaking unless he gets himself worked up about something.

His back legs still seem weak though, but that could be his age, right? I mean, he's almost nine and a half...

The vet said to take him back tomorrow if he's no better, but since he's so much better we aren't taking him. We'll take him if his health slips though.

A couple of family friends said I should take him to a different vet since our vet wasn't rushing to do blood tests and said he weighs enough that not eating for a few days wouldn't hurt him (he's not terribly over-weight, but he could stand to lose a pound or two). But I've ignored them. For one thing we did actually talk to two different vets, and for another thing our finances are part of why the vet is delaying the blood tests... In hopes we can avoid the expense. Don't get me wrong, I don't begrudge Kero a penny, but funds only stretch so far, you know? Anyway, it looks as though he's getting better, so maybe we can avoid the blood tests completely? This time at least!

Kero is sick and I'm worried (kinda R/WP)

Kero is sick.

He's been off his food for almost a week and shaking violently since Thursday.

We took him to the emergency vet early hours of Friday morning after he came to me, whimpered, then just lay down beside me panting heavily. His temperature was 40C (112F)) and his heart rate couldn't be measured because he was shaking so. We took him back that same afternoon and his temperature had dropped to 38.7C (109.4F) but there was no other change.

Also, his back legs seem weak and we have to help him on and off furniture and up the steps to the street. Plus he seems to get confused sometimes.

He's on antibiotics and has to go back tomorrow if he's no better.

I'm really worried about him and so scared we're going to lose him. I'll do what's best for him, but if what's best is to let him go then I know it's going to hurt like heck! Just the thought of maybe having to let him go makes me ache so much it's all I can do not to crumple up in a heap and cry.

Adopted Cara

So, we adopted a kitten yesterday.

She was my Mam's kitten, but she was too much for her, so now she's our kitten. Well, my kitten actually.

Mam had called her Kiera, pronounced "Key-rah" which is a pretty name, but because it was so close to Kero, which is pronounced "Key-row" if you don't know, we've changed it to Cara. It seems to fit her, if nothing else because it means "friend" and she's very friendly.

She's also very tiny; she only weighs 1lb 15.5oz.

Kero seems to absolutely love her; they sleep together already.

Luna is trying to make friends with her; Luna talks to her through the cage bars.

Jacob, Jasper, Jenks and Joshua aren't as impressed though. One of them especially got angry and squeaked and hissed at Cara.

Kero's September 2013 medical update

A couple of years ago Kero had a lump thing that was something like a wart above his left eye, and the vet removed it. Last year we noticed one below his left eye, but the vet left it alone at the time. But recently it's started irritating his eye, so we all agreed it should be removed.

He went to the vet for his shots on September 19th, which was when we decided to have them remove it. He went in to have it removed on September 23rd, and all seemed to have gone well, but when he went back for his post-op check up on September 25th the vet told us the stitches were irritating his eye. He was also given a cone to wear just in case it was more because he was pawing at it than because of the stitches. Then he went for another check up on September 27th, and while he was there ended up going back under anasthetic to have the stitches sorted out. Then we were told to bring him back on September 30th, which we did. Once again all seemed fine, but the vet said to bring him back on October 7th (today) after his antibiotic ointment ran out.

He finally has the all clear, which I'm sure he's relieved about... So am I!

Stopped the tablets (kinda FD)

I'm not taking the tablets any more.

Well, actually, I stopped taking them about two months ago.

Why?

Because I was having side effects and the doctors were blaming them all on my weight, despite the fact that some of them (like the extremely bad headaches) couldn't be weight related. Not to mention the fact that the tablets were actually causing much of the weight gain.

I wasn't 100% sure it was the right thing to do at first, but all the side effects disappeared within a few days of me stopping the tablets, and I've ost 8lbs since stopping taking them, bearing in mind I'm not exercising as much as I should be due to trying to get my strength back after a year of essentially spending most of the time laying on the sofa feeling sorry for myself.

I'm also wanting healthier foods again; fruit and veg rather than chocolate and pizza.

Luna turns 2 (FD)

Today is Luna's 2nd birthday.

We weren't sure what to give a degu as a birthday present, so we gave the degus a couple of little peanuts each but gave Luna an extra one. She seemed happy with that.

We've had her a couple of weeks now, and she's really settling in well.

She absolutely adores Kelly and will let him pet her for quite some time. She isn't as fond of me. She doesn't hate me, but will pick Kelly over me any time, even if I'm holding food and he isn't (I know because we tested it). So I guess she's decided she's his degu. That's fine by me since I have the four boys anyway, LOL!

Anyway, happy 2nd birthday Luna!

Adopted Luna

We adopted a female degu today.

Her name is Luna and she will be 2 on October 1st 2013.

I found out about her through a page I found about degus on Facebook and offered her a home.

At first they declined my offer due to how far she had to travel to get here, but they can't find a better home so Luna made the long journey. She didn't cope too well with it, but she's calming down slowly.

I've now got her previous owners on Facebook so they can keep up with Luna related updates.

Jayde and Lucy turn eight

Jayde Bramblerose and Lucy Blackthorn are eight years old today!

How did that happen?

Where has the time gone?

Seems like only yesterday they were little puppies... Still hurts that I had to give them up, even though I know my Grandma and Helen and Tom love them dearly and do their very best to look after them in the way they deserve.

Well, anyway, happy birthday Jayde Bramblerose and Lucy Blackthorn!

Snowball The Oddball Kobold

"Snowball is a white kobold; something so rare that the other kobolds in his tribe won’t accept him as a proper kobold. In fact, they delight in making poor Snowball’s life miserable. But Snowball is determined that some day he’ll show them that there’s nothing wrong with being a white kobold.

One day, in Snowball’s tenth Winter, something strange comes to the mountains where Snowball and his tribe live. The kobolds want to know what it is, but with their red-brown colour they’ll be spotted much too easily in the snow. Only Snowball, with his white colouring, has a chance of investigating without being spotted. Could this be Snowball’s chance to prove he’s a useful member of his tribe and finally be accepted as a proper kobold?"

This is my latest book, and today is the official release date for it. The ISBN is 9781301855421.

It's now available to buy via Smashwords in all formats they offer, and if it isn't already available from other retailers (such as Apple, Barnes And Noble, Blio, Diesel, Kobo, Sony, and WH Smith) it soon will be!

To stay private or not... That is the question!

I've been considering making my blog public again, but I'm not sure.

I kind of miss the comments from people.

Would anyone even notice if I was posting again?

Or maybe I should just make it available for certain people to read? You know? Those people who have actually kept in touch... Which rules out most of my followers, unfortunately.

I don't know.

For now I'll do nothing... I'll just keep it private - so only I can read it - and see how I feel another time; when I know what I want to do.

Asha's Big Adventure

"This is the story of a little girl who loves exploring, a hungry wolf, three brave little pigs, three nervous goats, a troll with a toothache, and three misunderstood bears.

Based on the author’s own takes on three well-known fairy tales, “Asha’s Big Adventure” tells the story of a little girl named Asha who ignores her parents’ warnings about going exploring in the woods near where they live. Asha soon finds herself getting lost, being chased by a hungry wolf, unable to cross a bridge because of a grumpy troll, and proven guilty of breaking and entering by an angry family of bears."

This is my latest book, which is officially released today. The ISBN is 9781301755868.

It's now available to buy via Smashwords in all formats they offer, and if it isn't already available from other retailers (such as Apple, Barnes And Noble, Blio, Diesel, Kobo, Sony, and WH Smith) it soon will be!

Hastings Pirate Day 2013

Today was 2013's Hastings Pirate Day.

Kelly, Kero and I were going to go, but it's still so hot! I think it's supposed to have been the hottest day of the year so far today... Sure felt like it!

Kelly went and got some photos for me again and says it was fantastic.

Wish I could see the photos.

Better yet, I wish I could have gone with him!

At least this time he brought a present home for me: a pirate goblet. It's really cool! It's plastic but carved to almost feel like it has the grainy effect of wood,, and it has a skull and crossbones on it, which is tactile so I can actually feel it!

St Leonards Festival 2013

Today was the St Leonards festival.

I was meant to go - Kelly, Kero and I were going to go together - but it was so hot that it wouldn't have been fair on Kero. It's been VERY hot this Summer, and between the heat and the crowds... Well, like I said, it wouldn't have been fair on Kero.

I wish I had gone though.

I miss going out places, and it sounds like it was fun.

Kelly got photos for me, but now that I can't see that doesn't mean much.

Plus, that doesn't change the fact that I was stuck indoors...

This is not a menu (kinda FD)

You're not seeing things. This is not a menu. There's no mention of chips and cheese or any of the other meals I've been enjoying. Nope... This is not a menu!

There's no menu today, because I didn't write one.

The idea of the menu was to help me figure out what we were having for the week, but after the first couple of days of each week I was finding I didn't fancy what I was meant to have so I was having something else. Either that, or we'd end up doing something that meant we either couldn't be bothered to cook or had less thime than planned (partially due to my very annoying irregular sleeping pattern).

So I'm not writing a menu now. We'll just have to figure it out as we go... That's what we were doing most of the time anyway, LOL!

St Michael's coffee morning (FD)

Kelly, Kero and I went to the coffee morning at St Michael's Hospice yesterday as it's just up the road from us and they allow Kero to come in. Plus, all money raised goes to help the hospice.

We had a little look around, had a cup of drink (tea for me, coffee for Kelly and water for Kero) and a snack of cheese scones and fairy cakes.

It was nice; I liked being out!

No longer publishing direct to Amazon

Due to navigation issues, I'm no longer publishing directly to Amazon.

I'm sorry for any inconvenience this causes people buying my books, but I feel it's the best choice for me.

My books are available in all formats Smashwords offers, so they are still available for you to read on your Kindle if that's your prefered way to read ebooks. Smashwords even gives instructions on how to get your books on to your eReader (if you need them).

Also, Smashwords does distribute to Amazon... Assuming Amazon feels I've sold enough books to be worthy of acceptance by them.

A-Z character challenge

There's another "A-Z" type reading challenge on one of the groups I'm a member of on Goodreads. This one is a character challenge though. You have to read books with a character in them for each of the letters of the alphabet. I don't mean read a single book with all the alphabet full of characters in, obviously, but read books until you've read about a character with a name starting with each of the letters of the alphabet.

Anyway, I finished my list earlier, so here it is:

A - Alex (Noah's Ark)
B - Bonnie (Queen Rider)
C - Catherine (Catherine's Tale: Love, Loss, Lust And Lies)
D - Dazz (Ice Country)
E - Ella (The Encounter)
F - Felix (Phoenix Watching)
G - Gandalf (The Lord Of The rings)
H - Hemingway (Blue Hearts Of Mars)
I - Ivy (Every Which Way But Dead)
J - James (A Class Apart)
K - Kara (Lichgates)
L - Lyra (The Golden Compass or Northern Lights)
M - Miles (Looking For Alaska)
N - Nikki (Nikki Powergloves - A Hero Is Born)
O - Oliver (Oliver Twist)
P - Polly (The Troll Trap)
Q - Quinn (Freeblood)
R - Rikke (Rikke: The Littlest Troll In Norway)
S - Sam (Shelter From Thunder)
T - Theodore (The Goldenwealth Light)

Cabin fever (kinda R/WP)

I think I'm suffering from cabin ffever or something. Well, that's the best way to describe it. In fact, it's the only way I can think to describe it!

Over the past year or so I've hardly been out. Actually, the last time I went on anything close to an outing was when we went to meet Carl from the station at the end of August last year. The only times I've been out since then have been to go to medical appointments or for a rare - and very short - walk with Kelly and Kero.

I feel like I've not been out in forever; like I've been stuck indoors and now I'm suffocating and need to get out so I can breathe again!

Wednesday, June 26, 2013

Menu: June 26th 2013 - July 1st 2013 (FD)

Wednesday: Vegetarian mushroom quarter pounders with cheese.

Thursday: Curry and chips.

Friday: Potato wedges with cheese.

Saturday: Baked potato, cauliflower, cheese, and caramelized onion & sweet chilli chutney.

Sunday: Veggie bake.

Monday: Leftover veggie bake.

***

Kelly now goes shopping on a Tuesday instead of a Wednesday, because it was hard on him getting up early to go shopping after being up really late for the roleplaying game he has most Tuesday nights - well, early hours of Wednesday morning here - with some of his online friends. That's why this menu only goes to Monday.

Fairy Day and The Great Tadpole Rescue

Today is Fairy Day.

Yes, really!

I decided to publish my book "The Great Tadpole Rescue" to celebrate Fairy Day this year.

Here's the synopsis:

"Lily is a water fairy, which means it’s her job to make sure everyone who lives on her pond is safe and happy, so when Mrs. Frog’s tadpoles are stolen it’s up to her to rescue them.

Will Lily be able to find the missing tadpoles and get them home safely to Mrs. Frog?"

ISBN: 9781301282746

It's already available via Smashwords in all formats they offer, and will be available via Amazon in the next day or so (exactly when depends on which Amazon you buy from). It will also be available via other retailers - such as Apple, Barnes & Noble, Blio, Diesel, Kobo, Sony, and WH Smith - in the next couple of weeks!

Super Moon 2013

Tonight is the "Super Moon" apparently.

Going to get Kelly to take a photo or two of it. Assuming it's not too cloudy to see it, since it's been stormy recently and I'm not sure if the clouds have thinned yet.

Wish I could see the Super Moon like everyone else is able to... They're all excited about it, and I feel like I'm missing something important!

*Sigh*

Cover artists

Until now, all my covers have been created by my Dad under the name "Gendrill Publishing" or by Karl Mousley. I'm pleased with their work, and I do plan on using them for more covers in the future, but I now have a third cover artist.

His name is Jacob Blackmon, he's a freelance artist, and he's already created the cover for "Snowball The Oddball Kobold" for me, which is a story I plan to publish on September 2nd 2013.

You can check out the cover at http://prodigyduck.deviantart.com/art/Snowball-the-Oddball-Kobold-379891363 if you like.

Book sales in to triple figures

My book sales are well in to the triple figures now!

As of today,I've sold 105 books on Smashwords, not counting the 22 copies of "Frank The Friendly Ogre" people have in their libraries, since that one is free so sales of it don't count. Plus I've sold about a dozen via Barnes And Noble (mostly due to Iggy).

Those aren't huge sales figures, especially when compared to the big name authors like Terry Pratchett, Terry Brooks, Kim Harrison, J K Rowling, etc, but it's a great start; my books are starting to get noticed! :)

All I can say is... Thank you to the readers who have made this possible!

Degu update

The degus are settling in well. Though Jenks remains quite nervous, and I have scratches from when he panicked while I was holding him. But he was just frightened at how big the room was, I think. None of them have really tried to hurt us intentionally. Unless you count Jasper checking if we happen to be edible, which we don't as he does that to everything and everyone, LOL!

Jacob is the only one brave enough to be nose to nose with Kero though, although Joshua came close when I was holding him earlier.

It's OK for them, it's not their life! (Kinda FD and R/WP)

This healthy eating thing isn't going too great. We're not having as many take-aways, but I'm pretty sure most of our meals wouldn't count as "healthy" really.

After the letter I got from the hospital today though, I really don't care right now. OK. That's not strictly true. I do care, because I know I need the weight off. But I also could do with the comfort of some of my favourite foods right now too!

Apparently it's fine if I die, as long as I don't do it on their operating table where they can get the blame for it happening.

OK, so they didn't say that exactly, but they might as well have.

What they actually said is that they refuse to do a hysterectomy because of the risk I might stop breathhing during surgery.

I know of that risk, and still wanted to do it, because if I make it through the surgery things will be better for me afterwards. But apparently what I want doesn't matter.

I'm not too sure right now if I'm more angry or upset, or if it's because they won't do it or because they told me via a letter rather than face to face at an appointment.

It's OK for them, it's not their life!

Sure, the tablets are keeping the bleeding light - I've even had a few days in a row with no bleeding a couple of times. But with two vitamin supplements for iron (one giving me 100% of my RDA, the other giving me 33%) as well as these tablets and what I get from some of my food, there should be no bleeding. Actually, there should be no bleeding just with the tablets, especially since a normal dose is 2 a day and I'm on a 3 a day dosage!

My point is though, even with the bleeding only being light now, the fact it's taking so much to make it so should tell them it's a big enough issue that I should get the go-ahead for the surgery... Even with the risks.

Plus, it's my body!

I've had enough, and they don't care!

Spotlighted by a story reading ape

I was spotlighted by Chris The Story Reading Ape today.

You can see the page where he put me in the spotlight at http://thestoryreadingapeblog.com/spotlight/victoria-tori-zigler-author/ if you want.

He's a bit behind on the list of my books, since he mentions the last Toby's Tales book being published "next month" and I published that in February, but I appreciate the effort he put in to the post, and am honoured he considered me worthy of being in his spotlight section.

Kero's World, book 3: Kero Gets Sick

"Kero isn’t feeling well at all, and that means only one thing: a trip to his least favourite place in the world... The vet! What will the vet do to make Kero feel better? And will Kero think it was worth the trip to the vet in the end?"

That's the synopsis for Kero's third book, which was published today.

It's already available via Smashwords in all formats they offer, and will be available via Amazon in the next couple of days. It will also soon be available from sites such as Apple, Barnes & Noble, Diesel, Kobo, Sony, and WH Smith.

We have degus

We did get the degus.

We planned to get two, but the litter they had in was four males, and the pet shop didn't want to seporate them. At first I wasn't sure we should have taken all four, but after watching them I'm glad we did. Their personalities are such that if they were paired off wrongly they'd be as miserable as if they'd been alone.

We've called them Jacob, Jasper, Jenks and Joshua.

Jacob is a Hebrewname that means supplanter, Jasper is a Persian name that means treasurer, Jenks is a Hebrew name that means God is gracious, and Joshua is a Hebrew name that means God is salvation.

We didn't name them those things for the meanings though.

Jacob and Jasper were chosen when we thought we were only getting two. They're the main werewolf and my favourite vampire respectively from the Twilight books and movies. Jenks is after the pixie in Kim Harrison's Hollows book series. And Joshua was the first "J" name we thought of when trying to decide on a fourth "J" name

Anyway, we got them on Monday (June 3rd 2013) and as of yesterday they're 13 weeks old... If we understood what they said at the pet shop about how old they are right, at least. So that makes their birthdays March 9th.

Wednesday, June 05, 2013

Menu: June 5th 2013 - June 11th 2013 (FD)

Wednesday: 4 cheese pizza.

Thursday: Chips, cheese and gravy.

Monday: Leftover vegetarian shepherd's pie.

Tuesday: Eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms, beans and toast.

Thinking of getting degus

We're thinking of getting a pair of degus.

They're rodents that look something like rats with furry tails.

Kelly saw some in a pet shop in Hastings and fell in love with them. He's talked of nothing else since he saw them on Wednesday, LOL!

So, we looked up information about them, and both like the idea.

We've been reading stuff all over the internet, but mostly on www.degutopia.co.uk, which is a site I found while looking up their dietry requirements.

There are a lot of rules for their care, but they're not that difficult to deal with as long as you make sure they get plenty of exercise and stay away from fatty and sugary foods as a rule (some can be given as treats from time to time though). They essentially need high fibre vegan diets, with the least fatty nutts (like hazelnuts) and least sugary fruits (like apples) being OK as treats from time to time, but only as rare treats (like once a month or something). It'll be nice to have someone else in the house not eating meat, LOL! They have to have their weight monitored closer than mine though.

They're very social creatures who love getting attention.

They need sand baths a couple of times a week to keep their fur in good condition, and must NEVER be grabbed by the tail, because their tails will fall off, hurting them a lot in the process (it's a defence thing from in the wild).

Celebrating our anniversary and Kero's birthday 2013 (FD)

We had a great time celebrating our wedding anniversary and Kero's birthday!

We had some nice weather, so Kelly, Kero and I went for a couple of walks together. Though they had to be short ones, because I get tired and dizzy easily (if the hospital would hurry up, I wouldn't have these issues). Still, short walks are better than no walks, right?

We also watched the first two Tinkerbell movies together. They're really cute movies. I'd seen them before, but I didn't mind watching them again, especially since Kelly hadn't seen them and wanted to.

I helped Kelly put some of his figures together too. Well, I just put them on bases, but that's helping... Kelly says it counts! They're called tyranids. I think that's how you spell it, anyway. They're sort of rapter looking things.

Also, Kelly had pasta with tomato sauce and cheese with me without adding meat or anything, so we actually had the exact same dinner on our anniversary! Usually even if he has what I'm having he'll add some meat or fish, but not this time. This time he ate a fully vegetarian dinner with me!

We had some cheesecake too, though it took us until the following evening (Kero's birthday) to eat that.

Kero's World, book 2: Kero Celebrates His Birthday

To celebrate the 9th birthday of my West Highland White Terrier, who the books are based on, I published "Kero Celebrates His Birthday" yesterday, which is the second book in my "Kero's World" series.

Here's the description:
"It’s Kero’s birthday, and his humans are doing everything they can to make it a special day for him. What will Kero think of all the fuss and attention? And what exactly makes a birthday special for a dog anyway?"

The book is already available via Smashwords in all formats they offer, and is currently in the process of being published on Amazon. It will also become available via other retailers in the near future, such as Apple, Barnes And Noble, Diesel, Kobo, Sony, and WH Smith.

10th wedding anniversary tomorrow!

I can't believe it, but it's true!

Tomorrow marks mine and Kelly's 10th wedding anniversary!

Where has the time gone?

May 12th 2013 healthy eating update (FD)

We're almost a week in to our new healthy eating plan, and not doing too badly.

True, right now I'm eating some chocolate, which isn't the healthiest of things to be eating, but I've mostly been snacking on fruit. Mainly strawberries and peaches the past few days.

The reason I say we're not doing too badly is because we haven't had take-away since Wednesday, which is our pre-approved take-away day. We had been having take-away almost every night, so no take-away for four days is a good start!

Plus, as I said, I've mostly been snacking on just fruit. So has Kelly.

I'm trying to find some different vegetarian recipes for myself to keep variety in my meals. I have several, but you can never have too much variety in your meals in my opinion. Anyway, I haven't really found anything new yet, though I am liking the sound of pasta with asparagus, mushrooms, peppers and tomatoes, served with garlic bread, which someone said they were eating the other day. I'm assuming there was some kind of pasta sauce involved too, though none was actually mentioned.

Wednesday, May 08, 2013

Menu: May 8th 2013 - May 14th 2013 (FD)

Wednesday: Take-Away.

Thursday: Vegetable fingers, chips and beans.

Friday: Vegetarian Chinese wraps (spring onions, cucumber and hoi sin sauce in wraps).

Saturday: Mushroom burger, mashed potatoes and vegetables.

Sunday: Soup and bread.

Monday: Cauliflower cheese grill, roast potatoes and peas.

Tuesday: Veggie grill, hash browns, eggs and beans.

Kero's World, book 1: Kero Goes Walkies

"If there’s one thing Kero loves more than going for a walk, then it has to be going for a walk that takes him to more than one place. Today his walk will take him both to the park and to the beach. What will he find there? Who will he see? And what will a little dog like him think of it all?"

7th bloggerversary

Today is the 7th anniversary of when I started blogging.

My blog has been private now for several months. I wonder how many of my followers are missing my posts?

Sometimes I wonder about making my blog public again, but I haven't done so because I feel like having my blog available for everyone to read then means I have to be able to follow the blogs of those who are reading mine, which then means I spend more time online than I want to. When that happens my time with Kero and Kelly suffers, and I don't get the things I need to do each day done (including household chores).

I do miss knowing what others thing of what I have to say though.

Mind you, most of my followers never bothered to comment anyway.

And most of those I thought were friends wouldn't even answer my e-mails when I stopped blogging.

Ah well, at least some people still keep in touch.

Anyway...

Happy 7th birthday to my blog!

Kelly's birthday and dietry evaluations (FD)

There's something about birthdays that makes you evaluate things in your life. Kelly's birthday is no exception it seems.

It's Kelly's birthday today, and the topic of conversation is breaking the bad habits we've gotten in to when it comes to our diets since I got so ill with my anemia.

We're both heavier than we want to be (by several stone) and know we've not been eating right lately.

It's a shame it's so much easier to get bad habits than to get rid of them.

We're going to try though.

We're going to stop buying take away so much, stop drinking so much pop, and stop earting so muchin the way of junk food in general (such as chocolate, chrisps, cake, etc).

Our health will benefit from it, I'm sure!

Goodreads 2013 reading challenge

Goodreads does a reading challenge each year for you to challenge yourself to read a certain number of books in the year.

I originally said 100, but Kelly said that would be too easy for me, and - since I agreed - I changed it to 200. My Mam and Dad think that was for the best too, especially since I read a little over 160 last year according to Goodreads.

I'm thinking I should change it again though, because I'm almost at 100 already, and we're only just at the end of March.

OK, I admit many of the books were short children's books and some were short stories, but there's no rule saying what length of book, and Goodreads themselves are adding to my total each time I read a book. If they say they count, I say so too!

Emma-Jane is 3 today!

Emma turned 3 today!

Hard to believe it, but it's true!

She starts full time school next week, I think they said. Personally I think 3 is way too young, but she's not mine so it's not my choice. She's bright enough to do OK though; she's a really smart kid, so that's some comfort.

Still hard to believe she's 3 years old and starting full time school though!

Thoughts on yesterday's snowfall

We had a fantastic snowfall yesterday!

Kero and I played in it on and off, coming in for warm drinks when we needed to.

Eventually it got so deep that Kero couldn't wade through it, so Kelly had to shovel it to the side so he could get outside when he needed to.

Funny thing is, then Kero promptly dove in to the pile and started rolling about in it, snuffling and snorting as he rolled about and ended up with snow in his fur and up his nose.

It was so funny to hear him!

Wish I could have seen him... I miss being able to watch him play like that.
